ABOUT ME

A Short Introduction

Hello, my name is Josiah, and I am passionate about integrating engineering into the field of ophthalmology as a “physicianeer.” Ever since I was a kid I was making my own hot wheels tracks out of paper, cardboard, and tape. Or I was figuring out how technology worked by taking it apart - just ask my mom what happened to the family telephone when she wasn’t looking!

Although I earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in biomedical engineering I felt a calling to journey with people in their medical illnesses as a physician. Late in medical school I discovered ophthalmology and realized that I could more directly combine my technical skills as an engineer with microsurgery, medicine, and patient care.

After medical school I decided to pursue a postdoctoral engineering research fellowship and was supported by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman foundation to develop ophthalmic technology related to Age Related Macular Degeneration.

Currently I am an ophthalmology resident at Cook County Health in Chicago, IL where I have the opportunity to manage end-stage, complex eye diseases and do a variety of challenging ophthalmic surgeries in every subspecialty.

As I continue my journey in ophthalmology residency I am always looking for ways to build electromechanical solutions for patients and clinicians using my skills in 3D printing, CAD modeling, and electronics.
